The 1935 Auburn 851 Super-Charged Phaeton was the high water mark for the Auburn Automobile Company. It is a fine example of Gordon Buehrig’s Rolling Sculpture. The Auburn line was restyled by Gordon Buehrig for 1935. It was to be the final look for Auburn.

The year 1935 marked the introduction of the supercharger for Auburn. Augie Duesenberg, who was chief engineer for Duesenberg at the time, was brought in to develop a supercharger for the Auburn line. The result was a 150 horsepower car that would grab the attention of the buying public.

This example is a Classic Car Club of America First Prize Winner and is certified by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club as a Category 1 car, correctly configured as it was delivered from the Auburn factory.  Presented in maroon with a luxurious tan leather interior and tight-fitting beige cloth top, its appearance is further set off with chrome headlights and maroon wire wheels. It is fitted with a Columbia 2-speed rear axle that Auburn called “Dual-Ratio,” which substantially improves its performance and is enjoyable on today’s high speed highways. The previous owner reports that the engine was given a comprehensive overhaul in 2006 at a cost of over $17,000. This outstanding vehicle is ready to be enjoyed to the fullest.
